The Sussex Beacon Relay

Corporate Relay 2018The Sussex Beacon Relay returns for a fourth year – with a difference!

We didn’t think it was fair to restrict the fun to businesses only, so we are shaking things up for 2019. This year, anyone can enter a team (over the age of 17), whether that’s friends, family, colleagues or businesses big or small.

The Sussex Beacon Relay takes place at The Grand Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday 24 February 2019 on Madeira Drive, Brighton. Teams of 4 runners will complete the 13.1 mile course in a relay, each completing just over 5k each by passing a baton between their team mates. Teams will battle it out to complete the course in the quickest time, with the top 3 teams winning an award and prize.

This event is first and foremost a fundraising event to raise vital funds for our services which help people living with HIV. Each team is asked to fundraise a minimum of £200 – but the sky is the limit! The team to fundraise the most for The Sussex Beacon will be crowned the winner of our Top Fundraiser prize and award.

How to register

Sign up to The Sussex Beacon Relay 2019 here. Team numbers are limited, so book soon to avoid missing out. A team captain will be required to complete the registration and pay for the team, so have everyone’s contact details handy.

Want to reserve your team, but not 100% sure who your four runners will be yet?
No worries, if you do not yet know who all four of your runners will be, you can register and leave their details blank for now. After registration, you will receive log in details to create an account for your team, through which you can update your runners details until January 31st.

FAQs

Whilst more details will be released during the next few weeks, we have answered a few key questions below.

Where does the relay start?
The first runner will begin the relay at the same place and time as The Grand Brighton Half Marathon. This means you get the full atmosphere of running a half marathon, for only a fraction of the distance! The other three runners will start at marked change-over points along the course. These will be located on a map, and clearly sign posted on the day.

Do I have to have four runners?
Yes, all teams must have four runners each. No one runner is permitted to run more than one leg as part of their relay.

Can I carry on running once I have passed the baton to my team mate?
If you would like to continue running to experience the finish line, you are welcome to do so once you have completed your leg of the relay, and passed on your baton to your next team mate. Please note, only the first and last leg runners will have a chip on their running vests, so runners two and three would not receive a chip time.

Does it matter what race number we wear?
It is very important that your four runners wear the correct race number for the leg they are running in order for your chip time to work. For example, the runner completing the first leg must wear the race number for their teams first runner, and the runner completing the last leg must wear the race number for their teams last runner. Wearing the wrong race numbers will result in an incorrect time or no time at all, resulting in disqualification.

Can we change our team runners details later?
Yes, after you have registered your team, you will be sent details to set up an online account if you wish too. This account will allow you access to your registration, so you can update details or change runners completely. Please note, any changes must be made by 31st January 2019.

Where do we get our race packs and T-shirts?
Further details will be sent out soon about how to get your teams race packs (including your numbers) and your T-shirts. This page will also be updated.

Can I enter more than one team?
Of course! Rather than choosing the quantity of teams you want on the ‘Enter Now’ page, we suggest you pick “1” team, and complete the whole registration process again to purchase another team.

Who can enter?
Anyone over the age of 17 can enter if they are healthy enough to do so.

How do I know if my online entry worked?
You will receive a confirmation email to the email address the Team Captain registered with. If you do not receive any email, please contact half.marathon@sussexbeacon.org.uk. The confirmation email contains key information about the event, so please read it and keep it safe for future reference.

When do entries close?
There are a limited number of places in the relay, whilst registration can remain open until the end of January, it will close early if all places are filled. If you find registration has closed when you try to sign up, please email rosie.hemming@sussexbeacon.org.uk with your interest, and we will be in touch if we receive a cancellation.

Can I get a refund or deferral?
Sorry we do not offer refunds or deferrals.

Can we fundraise for another charity?
No, this is strictly a fundraising event for The Sussex Beacon. If you fundraise for another charity, your team will not me permitted to take part in the event and no refund will be given.

Can I give my race number to someone else on the day?
No, the details your runners registered with must be accurate so our safety teams can access your details using your race number during the event should they need to.

I live abroad, can I still enter?
Yes we welcome entrants from overseas. If needed, you can collect your race packs and T-shirts on the day from our help desk.

Do I have to pay a booking fee?
Yes there is a small booking fee of £1 per team.
